Austin Gooder is a junior at Marin Catholic College Prep in Marin County at the base of Mt. Tamalpais. He is a student who focuses on leadership in the community alongside his normal school schedule. On top of normal school curriculum he has been studying music in symphonic band as a drummer and has contributed to the new drum line which performs during football season.

On a more sports related topic, Austin is no stranger to “different” sports. He was never that into main stream sports as a young kid. He started skiing at age 3 and moved to snowboarding at age 12 and has enjoyed that ever since. Austin views himself as a big mountain backcountry guy who loves floating through pow. He has also been climbing since he was 6 going to the gyms with his dad. Austin has been a certified scuba diver since he was 12 but diving since he was 8. Austin enjoys backpacking, mountaineering, running, surfing, swimming and much more. Austin has been a varsity runner since he was a freshman being the first freshman in his class to earn his letterman. Proudly Austin has taken each year to new heights and this past season added the title of Captain.

Outside of School Austin works at Summit Bikes in San Rafael part time which helps to fund his addiction that is biking. On top of all this Austin has till September 22, 2012 to achieve the rank of Eagle Scout in Boy Scouts. This is a major goal for him not only for personal achievement but also to keep the Eagles coursing through his family tree. A high peg Austin has set for himself is joining the Navy after College or going to the Naval Academy. He realizes that this is not easy but the goal for Austin is to volunteer for Navy SEALs and try his hand at the rigorous training that defines those powerful elite men.

Back to the most important thing: Bikes! Austin has been riding bikes since he was young and always enjoyed it. His first mountain rides were at China Camp in Marin and around trails by his house. He started to take riding more seriously in 6th grade when his 2 good friends got him into it. Racing began in 8th grade with Downhill at Sea Otter and Live Wire Classic at Northstar-at-Tahoe. As a freshman he raced NorCal for Marin Catholic and has continued to do so. He raced JV as sophomore and now as a junior Austin will be racing Varsity and is the Captain of the team. Outside of high school racing, Austin has made the jump to Cat 1 mountain bike racing in Cross country and Enduro Cat 2 in downhill. Austin will also be adding road bike racing to his list so it’s a Cat 5 license for this newb.

Austin had this to say about the coming season,” 2012 is gonna bring new challenges, new races, new bikes, new friends and new rivalries! I am stoked for each and every one. I will be focusing on XC for the beginning of the season and then transition to Enduro racing in the summer and fall. My goal is to always put forth my 110% effort so I can honestly come across the line without any regrets. Racing Cat 1 will be hard so racing myself instead of a position is gonna be a major change for me that will bring on new experiences. My motto: The only Easy Day was Yesterday! Meaning it’s game on 100% of waking hours whether it be school, racing, training, scouting or working. I welcome every challenge with a hand shake and hope to send it back from where it came asking for more. COME AT ME 2012!”

Andrew before he crushed 100′s of souls at Otter.

After a smashing string of success these past few months, the NRL Team took a moment to interview Mr. Andrew Taylor. Andrew embodies the core essence of the renaissance individual. Here are his thoughts…

Q: Tell us about your race results over the past few months? You have been very successful. What has taken you to that next level?
Andrew: This has been my most successful season by far! So far I’ve stood on the podium at every race this season and I just won my fourth race in a row last weekend. It’s hard to say exactly what has made the difference; I actually haven’t done a single interval this season. I have been spending more time on the road bike this year, however, and I’ve been trying to focus on carrying speed through corners in the singletrack.
Q: As a renaissance athlete, we know you are developing your outdoor skills in a variety of ways. What are you focusing on at the moment? What gets you stoked?
Andrew: Recently, my weekends have been kept busy by either bike races or rock climbing trips. This winter I started doing some mountaineering and have climbed two 14,000 ft. peaks. Over spring break, I did a three-day trip up Mt. Whitney with some friends from my college, and a few weeks ago, I climbed Mt. Shasta in a day. I like the idea of trying some fast alpine climbs, but I also want to do some more technical routes, with steep ice or mixed climbing.
Q: Congrats on getting into great colleges for this coming fall! Tell us a bit about where you are going and what you want to do with your degree.
Andrew: Thank you! For the last two years I’ve been studying mechanical engineering at Pacific Union College (home of the Napa Valley Dirt Classic). Next fall I will be transferring to UC Berkeley to finish my engineering degree. I’ll miss it here at PUC, there are some really cool people here, and we have amazing singletrack right on campus, but I’m also looking forward to continuing my studies at the best public university in the Unites States! I plan on using my degree to work with something like bikes or climbing gear, something that I’m passionate about and is interesting to work on.
