History

For Youth, By Youth.

Some of the OG athletes on NRL.

In 2005, a young group of tightly knit high school sophomores came together with the concept of making a youth cycling development team that was run by students, rather than a bunch of adults. These youngsters felt that the camaraderie and mentality that junior riders had was a powerful connection that would build strong friendships and solid teamwork.

At this time, the only junior/U23 development teams in Northern California were road focused. This student crew developed the NRL Racing Team, which at the time was the first development mountain bike team in the beautiful state of California, USA. NRL Racing helped spawn several high school mountain bike teams that competed in the NorCal High School Mountain Bike League such as the Oakland Composite Team, the Fremont Composite Team and the American High School Team.

NRL was initially mountain bike focused, but now competes in all aspects of bike racing, and has further diversified into an outdoor sports team with athletes in endeavors such as climbing, mountaineering, triathlon, snow sports, kayaking and more. Many members of the team compete for their respective high school or collegiate teams and represent these academic teams at the highest elite level across the United States.

The reason for the evolution of the team to include more outdoor sports was several fold. The team felt like more youth could be involved in the same cause of our mission statements through different avenues of sport. In addition to this, many youth are attracted to non-competitive activities and the leaders within the NRL Team felt like we should enrich these youth with opportunity to do non-competitive outdoor sports. At the same time, branching out to other sports allowed the creation of the GO: Get Outdoos Club and diversified the skill set of NRL Athletes.

The NRL Team continues its legacy today, motivating aspiring athletes to reach their best, both with the mind and body.
